Summary:
  • Designed and printed a drone
  • Learned

This was my first drone and first experience designing for printing

order parts

I designed it to be modular in case a wing broke when I crashed

3d printed space frame

arm assembly

Which it inevitably crashed and broke at the (in retrospect) obvious place

damage

The next body design was me realizing that 3d printing is its own kind of space frame, and there was no requirement to make cut-outs for weight, instead it is better to tune that with printing parameters

Additionally long thin segments are best done with a material other than PLA.

new frame design

components added

And inevitably… this also crashed.

another crash

You can see tape on the back, this was an attempt to retain orientation. It was unfortunately symmetric. I ended up adding some LEDs off of the BEC in order to make the orientation more apparent at a distance.
